Even if you're not on vacation at the moment, have you been doing anything 'summer-y'? What do you associate with summertime? Things? Places? People? Activities? Wishing you all a lovely summer! :)
Truthfully, I sort of dislike summer. I am more of a cold-weather person and what my family calls an "indoor enthusiast." I do like taking walks, but I like walking when it's cooler (more autumn or spring than summer). So summer tends to remind me of air conditioning than anything else. :P Summer also reminds me of binge reading and binge watching TV shows. haha. I have a lot more time for books during the summer so I can spend a few hours at a time reading. Likewise with TV. :) Also, summer reminds me of late dinners. Since no one has to get up early for school, my dad likes making dinner late. We're night owls anyway, but we usually don't start eating dinner until 7:30 or 8:00 in the summer. In November, we moved to a new house with a very nice patio, so my parents and my brother and I have been sitting out on the patio when it gets cooler after dinner and chatting. It's been really nice. Though, because we haven't done this before, this custom isn't really a memory of summer. Yet. :D
Haha, indoor enthusiast. I like that. When I was a kid, my pediatrician once asked my mom if I was a 'couch potato' because I wasn't exactly the athletic type. And my mom replied, 'No, she just reads A LOT....which means I guess that she's sitting down inside a lot' haha.
Have you been reading or watching anything good recently? I'm all set for summer reads, but I haven't been able to find a great tv show since I caught up on 'Mr Selfridge' and 'Call the Midwife.' Suggestions always welcome :)
Books. . . I read "Gone With the Wind" and "Brothers Karamazov" this summer. I loved both. :D I'm almost done with "War and Peace" (finally). . . . not really my thing. The style kinda reminds me of Les Mis - what with its long descriptions of battles and what historians say happened during battles but what actually happened during battles and everything that happens in the whole wide world is rather inevitable and fate and stuff. I am just ready to be done with it. haha Also, I'm on the First Epilogue (yes, it has two) and I'm pretty sure that it's not going to end the way I wanted it to end. :(
TV. . .I haven't really been watching any shows regularly besides BBC's Merlin, which I watched with my younger sister and just finished a week ago. :) It's a good show overall. Hilarious to watch with someone else who can help you point out all the funny, random, and ridiculous stuff. My sister and I laughed at a lot of things that weren't meant to be funny in that show. haha. It was really fun.
I love 'Gone With the Wind'!! I've never actually read 'Brothers Karamazov' or 'War and Peace' -- good for you! They have always scared me too much to even begin haha.
Oh Merlin! Someone mentioned that to me awhile ago, but I forgot to check it out. Thanks for the reminder; I'll definitely look into it. And I totally know what you mean about having someone to laugh with you at things that aren't really meant to be funny - my sister is my go-to for that too haha.
Hi, Libby! Sorry I missed your last several videos! We were on vacation in Wyoming visiting my husband's family. Let's see........things that remind me of summer...... Swimming in my parents' pond. Week long stays in our camper just off the beach of Lake Michigan. Fireflies. Dragonflies. The cicadas' song. Cold watermelon. Fresh strawberries and blueberries. Homemade pop-sickles. Fresh produce form our garden, but most especially tomatoes and cucumbers. Sun-tea brewing on the picnic table. Cotton sheets and assorted clothes on the line. Freezer pies. Dinner on the grill. Homemade potato salad. The smell of cut grass. Lilies and trumpet vine in the garden. The kids washing the cars and running through the sprinkler. Root beer floats and homemade milk-shakes.Frogs and Toads. The smell of sunscreen and bug spray. The smell of a charcoal grill. Nights where the outdoors is so alive and restless. I really could go on, but I should probably stop now;) While summer is not my favorite season, there is so much that I love about it!
Thanks again for the tea-time videos! And welcome back to the States! May God bless you and yours!
Hi Kate! I hope you and the family had a great time in Wyoming. The chance to visit family has always been one of my favorite parts of summer!
I LOVE your list...I feel like I'm sitting out in the yard drinking in all that is good about summer just from reading your list. Also, what is sun-tea?? I've never heard of it and am intrigued!
Thanks Libby! We did have a wonderful time in Wyoming. It went WAY too fast, as always. Sun-tea is (at least to us here) tea brewed out in the heat of the sun. So, fill a pitcher (preferably glass) with cold water, add the proper amount of tea (we usually use a combo of black and fruit tea), and allow it to "brew" out in the sun for several hours. Then remove the tea, and sweeten or add lemon, or both(.......or none at all ;) according to taste. Lastly, chill, or pour over ice, before serving. You'll have to give it a try! And I am sure if you poke around on-line a bit you can find better and more precise recipes than the one above! :)
I'm sorry it has taken me so long to reply to this, Kate!! But this sounds like a FANTASTIC idea. Tea enthusiast that I am, I kind of can't believe I had never heard of sun-tea before. I can't wait to give it a try! Thanks for the idea :)
